The American Conifer Society offers a NewBroom Award. This prestigious award aims to recognize and support individuals dedicated to the study and research of conifers and related genera. Qualifications

To be eligible for the ACS NewBroom Award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be a registered student member of the American Conifer Society. The digital student membership is complimentary.
  2. Reside or attend an academic institution within a 500-mile radius of Rock Island, Illinois for the 2025 award season.
  3. Be pursuing a course of study or endeavor focusing on conifers and/or related genera.


No member of the American Conifer Society currently holding a National Office, Regional Office, or paid staff, including a contracted agent, or a “Reporting Person” on a committee sanctioned by the Board of Directors of the ACS, is eligible for these awards.


Award Details


The ACS NewBroom Award includes:

  • Registration for the 2025 ACS National Conference in Rock Island, Illinois, June 19-21, 2025.
  • Lodging at the conference hotel.
  • Included meals and excursions during the conference.
  • Reimbursement of mileage expenses up to $100.

Recipients of the award will have exclusive access to speakers and events at the conference, networking opportunities within the ACS membership base, and will be asked to assist with a range of conference support functions.


Application Process


Pre-Screening:
Before applying, please ensure you meet the qualifications outlined above. Applicants must verify their eligibility by agreeing to the pre-screening statement provided.

Section One - Personal Information: Complete the application form with accurate and detailed personal information, including contact details and educational history.

Section Two - Essay: Compose an essay detailing your background, goals in horticulture, and specifically, how conifers and related genera relate to your future endeavors. Highlight your strengths and any mentorship experiences within the industry.

Section Three - Recommendations: Provide at least two recommendations from employers, instructors, or individuals familiar with your work in horticulture. Recommendations should address your skills and dedication to the field, particularly regarding conifers.

Section Four - Media: Share photographs or links showcasing your passion for horticulture. This may include images of plants, trees, events, social media posts, presentations, etc.


Submission and Timeline

  1. Complete all sections of the application form.
  2. Submit your essay, recommendations, and media as instructed.
  3. Upon completion, you will receive confirmation via email.
  4. Applications are due by February 15, 2025.
  5. Selections will be announced in early March 2025.
  6. Successful applicants will receive a congratulatory phone call and further instructions, including a request for social media promotion of the National Conference.
