Congratulations to the 2025 NewBroom Award winners!

Join us in congratulating the NewBroom Award winners for 2025, Denise Gardner and Garrett Brown. Both Denise and Garrett hail from GVSU (Grand Valley State University) in Michigan. Both have amazing projects within conifer as part of their areas of accomplishment and interest. 

Denise shared in her application the following “projects involving conifers and related genera—have shaped my perspective on environmental stewardship, sustainability, and community education. These experiences have influenced my goals and prepared me to contribute meaningfully to the field.”

Garrett also expressed his love of conifers in his application. “From the weevils hiding in pinecones to the towering White Pines that enrich our forests, every element of our environment has a role to play. I am excited to continue learning, sharing, and engaging with communities, ensuring that our relationships with nature remain vibrant, reciprocal, and deeply rooted in respect and understanding.”

Our two NewBrooms will be attending the Rock Island conference, and you are sure to meet them as they network, help out, and enjoy the programs to the max!
