Count New Cones on Trees – Contribute to Community Science!

Hello! Dr. Jalene LaMontagne and Kiley Chernicky, of
the LaMontagne Lab at the University of Missouri - St. Louis and the Missouri Botanical Garden, met some of you at the ACS meeting in June, and now we’re reaching out to all ACS members. We would love your help counting new cones on conifer trees
    – wherever you live or travel! Cone Counters - Lite was launched on the iNaturalist platform in 2023, and we are always looking for new community scientists to join. To participate, it only requires that NEW cones (not the old brown cones)
are counted on conifer trees, and they can be in your yard, or what you see in public areas. The perfect time to count new cones is July and August (RIGHT NOW), but remember, zero new cones are data too!

This project aims to identify areas where there are LOTS of new cones produced in a year, and areas where there are few or no new cones produced in a year, and how that varies over time, and across species, at regional, continental, and global scales.
Conifer cone production follows a pattern called “mast seeding,” which means there is a highly variable amount of reproduction from year to year. These mast-seeding patterns are often highly synchronized locally, which means trees of the same species
may behave similarly to each other, but, in areas far apart, the trees may be doing different things. The goal of this project is to quantify new reproduction in conifers in as many geographic areas as possible to understand what drives conifer reproduction
and better predict when large “mast events” might occur, hopefully helping guide collection practices for seed and cone collection.

Want the quickest and easiest way to participate? You can read more about Cone Counters - Lite on the iNaturalist project page at https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/cone-counters-lite.

Want to take more detailed counts and other measurements? You can learn more about Cone Counters (not Lite), how to identify and count new cones, and other ways to submit data on the lab website at https://lamontagnelab.weebly.com/conecounters.html.

Questions? Email us at kiley.chernicky@umsl.edu or jalene.lamontagne@umsl.edu.

Sign-up for our mailing list to receive more detailed information on Cone Counters, reminders for when to count cones, and updates from work in the lab: https://forms.gle/SdYzhfV162KkCiuh6.
    Thank you!

ACS members – watch for more about this project in the next CQ.

Join us in congratulating the NewBroom Award winners for 2025, Denise Gardner and Garrett Brown. Both Denise and Garrett hail from GVSU (Grand Valley State University) in Michigan. Both have amazing projects within conifer as part of their areas of accomplishment
    and interest.

Denise shared in her application the following “projects involving conifers and related genera—have shaped my perspective on environmental stewardship, sustainability, and community education. These experiences have influenced my goals and prepared me
to contribute meaningfully to the field.”

Garrett also expressed his love of conifers in his application. “From the weevils hiding in pinecones to the towering White Pines that enrich our forests, every element of our environment has a role to play. I am excited to continue learning, sharing,
and engaging with communities, ensuring that our relationships with nature remain vibrant, reciprocal, and deeply rooted in respect and understanding.”

Our two NewBrooms will be attending the Rock Island conference, and you are sure to meet them as they network, help out, and enjoy the programs to the max!

The photography is amazing, with realistic detail.

Following the history and evolution of this world-famous garden was informative. It was almost a lifelong effort to create this garden from essentially the blank canvas of a meadow. One can only imagine the effort required first to create this garden. Then, one can appreciate the ongoing effort needed to manage a woody plant-focused garden, requiring constant challenges as the plants mature. I found his insights quite useful as we try to maintain our 50-year garden and the Harper Collection of Dwarf and Rare Conifers, where we volunteer. -Dennis Groh

The program offers an opportunity for members to add creative enjoyment and visual excitement to their gardens by acquiring distinctly unusual and interesting conifers. It is noticeably different from other yellow-colored arborvitae by having mint green foliage highlighted with a bright, frosting of platinum-cream that is most pronounced in a sunny location. As it goes into winter dormancy, it then transforms to a cream and caramel state with olive-green undertones. A typical growth rate is 8 to 12 inches per year. In 10 years, this attention demanding specimen may reach 12 feet high by 8 feet wide. It is very tolerant of heat and humidity and also very durable under the harshness of winter. It was just a 2 yr. old plant when planted in 2007 and was not damaged in the Polar Vortex winters of 2013 and 2014 in full sun. It also sustained no burn in the droughty, hottest summer of 2012. It performs well in USDA zones 3 through 7.

Pinus koraiensis ‘K G’: This very compact and dense witch’s broom of Korean pine has soft but firm, bluish-green needles that strike out from around the stem. Interestingly, there are often shorter tufts of needles tucked in around the end of the stem where the buds are held. Gary Gee of Gee Farms in Stockbridge, Michigan found it as a mutation on a Korean pine selection named ‘Winton’. At a slow growth rate of 1 to 3 inches a year, this charming tough garden gem may only be 1.5 ft. high and 2 feet wide. A sunny, well drained site will provide for peak performance. Because of its very tight structure, dead needles will eventually accumulate in the interior of this diminutive specimen. Consequently, for better ornamental appearance and for healthier air circulation, a gentle grooming of such debris is an important responsibility for appreciating this garden treasure. It is rated for USDA zones 3 through 8.

Cupressus nootkatensis ‘Sparkling Arrow’: This very narrow, upright, variegated selection of Nootka cypress has extremely pendulous, secondary branchlets that makes it a most interesting, gracefully weeping, dramatic plant. As for sparkle in a setting, the medium green foliage is generously covered with random splashes of creamy white to yellowish arrays of bright color that range from localized blotches to that of long sprays. The strong upward growth can be 12 inches a year. After 10 years, a happy ‘Sparkling Arrow’ can easily measure 15 feet tall and 3 feet wide. It is rated for USDA zones 4 through 8. A sunny well drained site that is not subject to prolonged dry periods is optimum for a vigorous looking specimen in a more northerly climate. In hotter more southern climates, some shade will aid in preventing the variegation from burning at times, especially until the tree becomes well established. This cultivar was found in 2001 by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon as a sport on ‘Green Arrow’ Nootka cypress.

Abies koreana ‘Kouhout’s Ice Breaker’: This dwarf, stand out of a silvery-white witch’s broom of Korean fir was originally offered for CCOY 2014. Jorg Kohout of Elstra, Germany is noted for discovering it on a ‘Horstman’s Silberlocke’ Korean fir. It has intensely recurved needles that consequently expose their bright, shimmering undersides. As young plants, they are generally globose with their stubby, radial branches. Over time and without some judicial pruning, they tend to develop a leader and evolve into flashy, handsome, dense, squat pyramidal shapes. In most areas, typical growth rates are 1 to 3 inches a year. In 10 years, a specimen is often around 2 feet high and wide if a central leader is not involved. It is rated for USDA zones 4 through 7. In cooler zones, a sunny well-drained site brings out the best show for this extraordinary garden accent. In warmer zones, partial shade can enhance better performance, especially with a site susceptible to an unrelenting sun and hot, humid nights. For such southerly climates, it is recognized that Korean fir performs much better if it is grafted onto Japanese fir (Abies firma) which we have as an option, Otherwise, our plants are grafted onto either Turkish fir (Abies bornmuelleriana) or Nordman fir (Abies nordmanniana).

May your conifer passion be assuaged with these garden treasures that flaunt their stuff with seasonal change, entertain with fascinating form and structure, and draw you in with appealing texture and color. Life is short, indulge and savor!

Saturday, November 2 - 8:30 AM

In person at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

We have five great speakers lined up to present at this year's Tree Symposium, following is a focus on two of them and their presentations:

Richard Buckley, The Trouble with Beech: Beech Leaf Disease

If it's not one thing, it's another! Invasive insect pests and diseases have wreaked havoc on ash, elm, chestnut, hemlock, and many others, wiping some of them almost completely from American landscapes and forests. The recent emergence of a new nematode disease in Beech has the attention of all green industry professionals. This one hour session will cover everything we currently know about Beech Leaf Disease. Other diseases and insect pests of Beech will be included. Emphasis will be on proper identification, scouting and monitoring techniques, and integrated control strategies that include all cultural, biological, and chemical controls.

Richard Buckley is the Director of Rutgers Plant Diagnostic Lab. He received his BS in Entomology and Plant Pathology from the University of Delaware and an MS in Turfgrass Pathology from Rutgers that led to his current position. In addition to his responsibilities as Director of the Lab, Mr. Buckley is an instructor in Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management School and teaches courses in diseases and insect pests of turfgrass and ornamental plants. He is also a frequent lecturer and invited speaker on disease and insect pest problems in turf and ornamentals, plant problem solving and disease and pest management techniques.

Ted Hildebrant, Grafting Methods for Tree Propagation

Master grafter Ted Hildebrant will present an overview of grafting methods and how they relate to the propagation of trees. The presentation will include a brief description of some of the more common methods of tree propagation with a focus on grafting and why it can be the method of choice. A live grafting demonstration will also be given along with a question and answer period.

Ted Hildebrant is a third-generation nurseryman and propagator, who, with his life partner Elly Keyel, owns and operates Coldwater Pond Nursery, a specialty woody plant propagation nursery in Phelps, New York. Ted enjoys plant propagation of all types and can be found periodically teaching woody plant propagation to both professionals and hobby gardeners as well as consulting for new and established nurseries. Coldwater Pond Nursery specializes in unique and rare nursery stock that is offered to gardeners, nurseries, and garden centers throughout the eastern United States. Ted and Elly reside on their nursery and farm with their two cats and far too many deer, groundhogs, voles and rabbits.

Attendees will have the opportunity to shop at the Symposium for unusual small conifers from Ted's diverse collection.

For information on the other speakers and to register, please click here to go to our Events page.
